WHAT IS GYROS?
Gyros is a traditional Greek dish that has gained worldwide popularity. The meat—usually chicken, pork, or lamb—is slowly roasted on a vertical grill, then thinly sliced and served in a wheat flatbread (pita) with fresh vegetables, fries, and tzatziki sauce. A BRIEF HISTORY
Gyros has its roots in the ancient Mediterranean. It was inspired by the original method of preparing meat in Anatolia and the Middle East—“rotating meat” similar to today’s döner kebab or shawarma. Gyros evolved into the modern form we know today in Greece during the 20th century, especially in Athens, where it became a popular street food specialty.
An interesting fact is that the word “gyros” in Greek means “to turn” — referring to the method of cooking meat on a rotating grill. Today, gyros is a symbol of Greek street food culture and an essential part of every visit to Greece. We bring this experience directly to the heart of Prague — fresh, honest, and ready while you wait.
